M. Marie Viney Downs, 91 of Freeport died Monday March 30, 2009 at the Freeport Rehab and Health Care Center. Born August 9, 1917 in Freeport she was the daughter of William and Maude (Pilkerton) Viney. She and Kenneth E. Downs were married June 30, 1937 he preceded her in death on December 1, 1968. Marie worked for Crum and Forester for 30 years in insurance adjusting and reception. She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Freeport. She enjoyed volunteering for the Friends Ever After Humane Society, FHN Memorial Hospital and Oakdale Nature Preserve. She is survived by one daughter Betty Jean (Marcus Bruce) Liles Jr. of Monroe, N.C.; two grandchildren Marcus B. (Trish) Liles III of Cary, N.C., Teresa (Gary) Griffin of Lewis, CO; three great grandchildren Marcus B. Liles IV, Lydia Liles both of Cary, N.C., Logan Renee Griffin of Lewis, CO and devoted friend Linda Klinger of Freeport.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers Joseph and Leo Viney.
Funeral service will be 11:00 am Thursday at Chapel Hill Memorial Garden in Freeport with the Reverend Dr. Donnley Dutcher officiating.
Burial will be in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport.
A memorial has been established for Friends Forever Humane Society.
