Obituary

Freeport – Nel (Binkely) Stearns, age 79, of Freeport passed away on October 31, 2025 surrounded by family.

Nel was born December 3, 1945 to Clair and Ethel (Fawver) Binkley.  She graduated in 1963 from Dakota High School.  In the early 1970's, Nel relocated to Milwaukee where she raised her two sons, Brent and Kirby.

Nel's life took an unexpected run when she reconnected with Jerry Stearns.  Their marriage on October 5, 1995 set Nel up for the greatest adventure, and love, of her life.  Together they rode around the country via semi with their faithful companion, Dusty.  Their home in Montana was their own personal oasis, and their time spent living among the mountains always held a special place in Nel's heart.

Nel and Jerry's marriage didn't just connect them, it also created a huge, beautiful blended family, which they treasured.  Relocating back to Freeport allowed them to be closer to their children, Brent (Jill Grinnell) Blehinger, Kirby Blehinger, Jeff (Lori) Stearns, and Mickey (Kevin) Weideman.

She is survived by her children, Brent (Jill Grinnell) Blehinger, Kirby Blehinger Jeff (Lori) Stearns, and Mickey (Kevin) Weideman.

Grandchildren Meghan (Jesse Hayes) Neiman, Alissa (Cody) Haven, Brandi (Brett) Faulkner, Bryce (Beth) Stearns, Brock (Taylor) Stearns, Kirby Hovden, Tate Hovden, Kylie (Corey Streif) Hovden, Brooks Hovden, Mallory (Mitch) Meyer, Brandon (Katie Kopping) Weidemann, Zach Grinnell, and Riley Grinnell. She is also survived by 16 great grandchildren and numerous four-legged members of the family.

Nel is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry; son, Brent, parents Clair and Ethel Binkley; and brother, Ronnie Binkely.  She also follows her beloved companions Dusty, Bristol, Brandy, Missy, Snickers, Squeakie and Puddy, all of whom have been waiting for her with wagging tails.

Nel will be remembered as a crafter, someone who brought ideas to life, a gardener, someone who loved bright blooms and enjoyed the serenity of her backyard.  She never turned down a game of dominoes or Rummikube, and loved when the whole family joined in.  Nel was the best hostess and always made sure banana cake, scotch-a-roos, and old fashions were ready for her family and friends to enjoy.

Nel and family want add a special thanks to the doctors and staff at Leonard Ferguson Cancer Center and FHN Hospice Staff.  Their excellent care and warmth over these last few years made the lows seem less low and the support ensured we were never alone in this fight.

Nel's celebration of life will take place from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on November 22, 2025 at the Best Dam Bar in Davis, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her name at the Friends Forever Humane Society of Freeport.  Condolences can be shared with the family at www.walkermortuary.com.
