Nicolette "Nickee" Bender, 93, of Freeport, IL, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2025, at FHN Memorial Hospital.  Born on June 13, 1932, in Freeport, Nickee dedicated her life to her family and her community. She married Gerald Bender Sr. on October 6th, 1951 and was the proud owner of Nickee's Beauty Salon for 30 years. Nickee later served 12 years as an administrative assistant at the Salvation Army. Her passion for service led her into public office, where she spent 24 years as an alderwoman for the City of Freeport and served as both a township trustee and Stephenson County Chairwoman.

She is survived by her children, Gerald Bender Jr. and Jeffrey Bender; her grandchildren, Ashley, Tyler, and Chase Bender; her great-grandson, Messiah Rodriguez; and her special friends, Laurie and Steve Whitehead. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Bender Sr.; her sisters, Trini Jacobs and Barbara Gordon; and her mother, Josephine Gentz.

A lifelong volunteer, Nickee supported numerous causes and charitable efforts in Freeport. She received several awards for her service and her accolades reflect her heart for giving back. She was also a proud member of the Women's Auxiliary, Eagles, Moose, ABWA, and many other civic organizations.  Nickee enjoyed trips to Vegas with her husband, bingo, shopping, camping up north, and always loved a good political debate.

Visitation will be held at Walker Mortuary, 321 W. Main St., Freeport, on Sunday, August 3rd at 1 PM. Funeral services will follow on Monday, August 4th at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Freeport salvation army or the NICAA Freeport golden meals program.  A reception will follow the burial at the Eagles Club starting at approximately 4:30pm .Condolences can be left for the family at www.walkermortuary.com
