Obituary

Patrice Alberta Engle (Petrakis)
February 24, 1959 – November 20, 2024

Patrice Alberta Engle, 65, of Freeport, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on November 20, 2024. Born on February 24, 1959, in Dubuque, Iowa, she was the daughter of Gus and Margot Petrakis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gus and Margot (Mathey) Petrakis, and her sister, Daphne Petrakis. She is survived by her sisters, Dina (Petrakis) Solomon and Melanie Hoeft; her two daughters, Melissa Engle and Jacqueline Engle; her five grandchildren: Ariean, Amariea, Anecya, Aiyanna, and Tyjae; and her great-grandson, Khalil. Patrice also shared a special bond with her beloved dog, Zander.

Patrice worked as a waitress for many years before earning her bachelor's degree in culinary arts. In the final decade of her career, she worked as a physical therapist assistant at the Monroe Clinic, where her dedication and care were appreciated by patients and colleagues alike.

Patrice was known for her bold, feisty spirit and a sense of humor that could light up a room. People often admired her quick wit and unpredictable nature, finding her stories and remarks endlessly entertaining. While her relationships were sometimes complex, Patrice had moments of great care and support that left lasting memories for her loved ones.

Patrice loved warm weather, clear skies, and bright sunshine. She also had a lifelong love for the color blue, which reflected her vibrant personality and appreciation for peace and calm. Flowers and gardening were especially meaningful to her, with lilacs being her favorite. This past summer, she enjoyed planting a lilac tree, hibiscus, and roses, creating a space of beauty and peace. Patrice was also known for her aversion to cold weather, often finding comfort in a cozy pair of thick, warm socks—something she loved almost as much as summer sunshine. She also loved mysteries, whether reading them in her younger years or watching crime shows later in life, a favorite pastime that brought her joy.

In her later years, Patrice became an active supporter of the Democratic Party, enjoying spirited discussions and engaging with causes she cared about. Her strong opinions and unique presence left a lasting impression on those who knew her.

The family would like to thank everyone who has offered support and kind words during this time. They take comfort in knowing that Patrice is now at peace, surrounded by the beauty she loved so much. Her memory will continue to bring comfort and joy to those who loved her.
