Rockford
Phyllis E. Fulkerson, (Mrs. Woodrow W. Fulkerson) 94, of Rockford, died Monday, October 8, 2007, at Rockford Memorial Hospital.
She was a resident of Freeport for 61 years, after which she was cared for at Wesley Willows in Rockford.
Born March 15, 1913, in Centralia, she was the daughter of Heber and Mable (Gragg) Burge. She married Woodrow W. Fulkerson June 7, 1936 and he died April 13, 1977.
She graduated from Centralia High School in 1931 and McHenry College in 1936.
She enjoyed teaching at the Clay Hill School in Jefferson County, where she taught grades 1-3, 6 and 8. She earned $50.00 a month and did the janitorial service as well.
Phyllis was a member of Embury United Methodist where she enjoyed the fellowship of the women's society. She loved contributing to the Church Bazaar.
She was a talented seamstress and enjoyed needlecraft and quilting.
Surviving is her daughter, Mary F. (Randy) Hopper Jr. of Titusville, Florida; one son, John E. Fulkerson of Loxley, Alabama; five beloved grandchildren, William Hopper, Gregory Hopper, and Cynthia Hopper Flanagan all of New Jersey; Jeff Fulkerson, Jennifer Fulkerson Wessberg both of Schaumberg; five great-grandchildren, Roger, Andrew, and Kipp Hopper: and Ella and James Flanagan; one brother, James Fletcher Burge of Columbia, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Revos Burge; and one sister, Genevieve Burkhart.
Funeral service and burial will be Monday 2 p.m in the Chapel of Peace at Oakland Cemetery & Mausoleum with Chaplain Brian Kinney of Wesley Willows officiating.
Visitation will be Monday 1 p.m. until time of service in the Chapel of Peace.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Wesley Willows, and the Women's Society at Embury United Methodist Church.
