Ralph Fredrich Schmid 90, of Freeport passed away Saturday, March 21, 2015 at the Emeritus Assisted Living Home, Alzheimer's Unit, in Rockford, IL, from complications due to Alzheimer's. Born August 22, 1924 in Detroit Michigan, he was the son of Jacob and Paula (Fehr) Schmid. He married Lovena Francis Holland, June 7, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan. She proceeded him in death. He worked as an electrician for the Hinsdale Hospital from 1965-1985, and retired from there as Chief of the Electrical Department. Ralph enjoyed traveling the United States with his wife and son in their camper in their younger days. Later in life he traveled with his wife, son and wife and grandchildren, to his relatives in Germany, and to Hawaii several times. He enjoyed gardening, and working in his yard. He loved his home in Punta Gorda Florida and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are his son & daughter-in-law, Dr. Dale and (Sandi) Schmid of Freeport; two grandchildren Kristin Schmid (Jon) Biggerstaff of Houston Texas, and Brandon Dale Schmid of Loma Linda, California. Also surviving are his brothers Walter Schmid, Jacob Schmid and Richard Schmid, and his sister Erica Baldyga. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother Harry Schmid. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 11, 2015 at the Freeport Seventh Day Adventist Church. Entombment will be at the Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum in Freeport.
