Richard Lee Herbig (Herb), 65, of Freeport, IL passed away on August 18, 2024 at FHN Memorial Hospital after battling a prolonged illness. He had his daughter and other family members by his side during this difficult time. Rick was born on September 16, 1958, to LaVerne and Marilyn (Jannsen) Herbig.
He is remembered for being an amazing father, crazy uncle BoBo, and a great brother. He was a huge sports fanatic. He enjoyed taking his daughter to the Rockford Ice Hogs games and was the biggest Green Bay Packers and Chicago White Sox fan. He was a family man and loved spending time with his big family. Rick was known for being a great cook, and many people know him from cooking at small restaurants and the Eagles Club in Freeport IL. Everyone loved his fried chicken and prime rib. He was a member of the Freeport Eagles Club Aerie #679. Rick also worked for Painters Union Local 802 out of Sun Prairie, WI as a drywall finisher until his retirement. Rick was proud to say that he was clean and sober since 1997 and would frequent meetings at the Alano Club in Freeport.
Richard is survived by his daughter Hannah Lee Herbig of Freeport IL, two sisters, Deborah (Tim) Carter, Peggy Spradlin both of Freeport IL, two brothers, Roger (Mechelle) Herbig of New Glarus WI, and Leroy Herbig of Freeport IL. Five nieces, Tonya Jackson of Freeport IL, Michelle (Simone) Offard of Freeport IL, Cynthia (Stephen Jackson) Ware of Freeport IL, Kristal (Zack) Yenney of DeFuniak Springs, FL., Kaylie (Walter Hayward) Spradlin of Freeport IL. Five nephews, Jared (Megan) Herbig of South Beloit IL, Brian (Megan) Spradlin of German Valley IL, Kevin Spradlin of Savanna IL, Brett (Alexa Grenoble) Spradlin of Haines City, FL, and Brock Spradlin of Haines City, FL. Ten great grandnephews, Cornelius (Courtney) Lewis, Trevon (Sam Osmond) Ware, Giovonni (Chasitee) Offard, Demetri (Kalah Bardell) Offard, Stephen Jackson Jr., Tyrese Ware, Tyler Calam, Bryce Calam, Brody Spradlin, and Walter "Mauri" Hayward III. Nine great grandnieces, Cornelia (Chavis Segner) Ware, Shanice (Spencer Robinson) Lewis, Brianna (Trenton Gaines Jr.) Ware, Poet Jackson, Samantha (Juan Ortiz) Jackson, Brianna Terry, Mariah Offard, Morgan Herbig, and Holley Spradlin. Several great-great grandnieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, mother, brother Kevin Herbig, and great-great grandnephew Brixtin Offard.
Visitation services will be held Thursday, August 22, 2024, at Walker Mortuary in Freeport IL, beginning at 4pm until 7pm. Funeral services will take place on Friday, August 23, 2024 starting at 10:30am at Walker Mortuary with procession immediately following at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Luncheon will be held at Laurel Street Community Church.
