Robert Grant Morton , 89, of Freeport, IL, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 14, 2017. He was born December 16, 1927 in Freeport; the son of the late John "Jack" C. and Ann (Amos) Morton. He was a 1946 graduate of Freeport High School. He married Donna Holtum of Freeport at First Lutheran Church on December 28, 1951. Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Most important to him were his faith, family, and friends.
Bob served in the Korean War with the 5th Regimental Combat Team and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service as well as the Combat Infantryman Badge. He was employed by Micro Switch for 33 years. He was a member of First Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir for 50 years and served on various committees. He was also an assistant Scout Master with Troop 7 of First Lutheran Church.
Bob was a dedicated volunteer at the Friends Forever Humane Society. He served a term as President of Habitat for Humanity and was instrumental in the opening of the Recycle Store. His hobbies and interests were playing golf, fishing, reading, and restoring antique furniture.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Morton of Freeport; son, David (Tonjua DiModica) of Freeport; daughter Jennifer (Jeffrey) Andre of Belvidere, IL; grandchildren, Kailee, Andrew, Dakotah (Keaton), Karley, Caleb, Isabella, and Ethan; great granddaughter, Kamyrn; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Hans. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Ann; sisters, Betty Piefer and Doreen Morton; brother, John M.; twin brother, Douglas; and infant brother, George.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, October 19 at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Freeport with Pastor Keith Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name.
