Freeport-Robert C. "RC" Miller, 90, of Freeport, died Monday, September 10, 2007, at Parkview Home.
He was born March 2, 1917 at the family farm outside of Bolton, IL, Florence Twp. He was the son of Charles A. and Eva (Schauer) Miller. He married Eugenie Vore April 4, 1941; she passed away December 7, 1979.
RC was a U.S. Army World War II veteran serving four and a half years in the South Pacific and European Theaters.
Engaging in numerous successful businesses throughout the 50's, he was most proud of his work as the former manager of Stephenson County Pure Milk Association which then came to be Midwest Dairyman's Association. Until his retirement he owned and operated Freeport Auction Service for 20 years. He was a 1936 graduate of Freeport High School.
His memberships include Embury United Methodist Church, Freeport Consistory; a 50 year Mason, Freeport Elks Lodge, AMVETS Post 32, original member of the AMVETS "Sad Sacks", founding member of the Freeport Jaycees, and the Stephenson County Farm Bureau for 62 years.
His greatest passions were his family, preserving family history, the world of agriculture, traveling the country after retirement with his companion Pat in their fifth wheel, spending winters in Arizona, and working for fun at his farm.
Surviving is his daughter, Melanie (Guy) Mitchard of Freeport; one son, Rev. Craig (Linda) Miller of Plainfield; three grandchildren, Eric Miller, Larissa (Travis) Bailey, and Kale (Dr. Venessa Theriault) Wahler, one great grandson, Rese Bailey and his long time companion and best friend, Pat Vincent of Freeport.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother Theron Miller, one sister Thelma George and grandson Bradley Miller.
Funeral service will be Friday 1:30 p.m. at Van Brocklin United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Ellis Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday 4 to 7 p.m. at Walker Mortuary.
A memorial has been established for the Freeport Community Foundation to be used for an Agriculture and Conservation Fund. The fund will generate grant funding for local non-profit organizations whose missions are to support agriculture and land conservation initiatives.
