Freeport – Robert W. Smith, 81 of Freeport died at Swedish American Hospital on Tuesday, October 19 ^th following a brief illness. He was born on March 28, 1940 to Earnest and Audrey (Crouch) Smith.  He married Sandra Stewart on September 4, 1982 in Durand.  Together they raised a family.  He was a member of Park Hills Evangelical Church of Freeport.  He enjoyed wood working making bird houses, benches, model churches, shelves and much more.  He was known for his sense of humor and his quirky smile.  Those who knew and loved him know what that smile looked like.

He is survived by his family including his wife, Daughters Barbara (Toad) Rollie of Durand; Valerie Smith of Durand.  Step-daughters Becky (Todd- who was like a son) Simmons of Eleroy; Susan (John) Matthews of New Bern, N.C. and Tami Mulder of Freeport; Step-son, Randy Merkel of Freeport.  He also has a brother, Dennis (Sandi) Smith of Durand.  His legacy includes 2 grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren and numerous Great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Daniel Smith; sister, Nancy Walsh and Grandson Matthew Boan.

Services will be held on Friday, October 22 ^nd at Park Hills Evangelical Church with a visitation beginning at 12:30pm and a service to immediately follow at 1:30 also at the church with Pastor Mark Balmer officiating.
