Robert (Bob) Eugene Swanstrom 96 of Freeport, IL, left his earthly home, where he was surrounded by family and went to his Heavenly home on March 14, 2026. He was born on May 2, 1929; the only child of Beatrice Swanstrom. Bob spent his early years growing up in Pecatonica, IL.
He was drafted on February 2, 1951, as part of the Army’s 101st Airborne 8th Cavalry and served in the Korean Conflict. He served for 2.75 years before being honorably discharged. While serving in Korea, he received the Purple Heart, Combat Badge, two Bronze Stars, a United Nations Ribbon, and two Citations from South Korea.
Upon returning to civilian life, he married Ethel Mae Becker on October 23, 1954. Together they established residence in Freeport and raised their three children: Linda, Ron and Brian. They enjoyed 70+ years together until Ethel’s passing in June of 2025.
Prior to and after his military service, he worked for Dean Foods in Pecatonica. In 1966 Bob went to work for Newell Manufacturing as a Second Shift Production Supervisor. A role that he held until his retirement 31 years later. After retirement, Bob held several part-time jobs as he needed to remain active and involved.
Besides Ethel, Bob’s other true love was his passion for flying and all things aviation. At age 16 he acquired his private pilot’s license. Through the years he owned many aircraft. Albertus Airport in Freeport became his home away from home. He also enjoyed buying old aircraft, restoring and flying them. It was through this love that he and Ethel formed many lifelong friendships.
Bob’s personality was one that just naturally attracted people to him. Whether it was during his working years or his time at the airport, he took an interest in the growth and development of others; positively impacting them in ways that will last forever.
His memberships include the Pecatonica American Legion; Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA); and Grace Valley Christian Reformed Church where he served as an Elder, Deacon, and Sunday School Superintendent.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Linda (Carl) Estep of Hartman, Arkansas; son, Ron (Jill) Swanstrom of Freeport; son Brian (Diane) Swanstrom of Baileyville. His grandchildren: Wendy (Jeremy) Cash of Nixa, Missouri; Brittany (Nolan) Fenwick of Freeport; Brianne (Brock) Greenhow of Rockton; Ben Estep of Barling, Arkansas; Leslie Estep of Hartman, Arkansas; Kelly Estep of Coal Hill, Arkansas. His great-grandchildren: Melody Estep (Xander Hunstable), Elizabeth & Annabelle Cash, Finnegan & Lennon Fenwick, Isla & Knox Greenhow, Brian Morrow. His great-great grandchildren, Eliana Hunstable, Jenna & Jaycee Morrow. His sister-in-law Loretta Larson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother Beatrice Myers; wife, Ethel; grandson, Nathan Estep; and great-grandson, Jeremy Morrow.
There will be a visitation held at Grace Valley Christian Reformed Church in German Valley on Friday, March 20, 2026 beginning at 9:30am followed by a service at 10:30 am also at the church. Following the service, there will be a luncheon held in the church fellowship hall area.
