It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ronald Gene Holmes, who returned to his loving wife, Carol Elizabeth Holmes, on Tuesday, May 5th at 3:45pm at the age of 94. He was born on May, 9th 1931 in Chadwick, Illinois to Harold and Lucille Holmes and would later relocate to Freeport, Illinois after serving as a naval core man on the U.S.S. Repose during the Korean War. Ron worked in the trades throughout his life and ultimately retired as a sales associate for JC Penny in 1994 after 20 years of service.

Known for his larger-than-life personality and genuinely kind demeanor, Ron brought joy and warmth into every room and every interaction. He was known for his sense of humor and catching smile. He was a scholar, a historian, and a life-long learner; always striving to learn a new skill or share his experiences with others. He enjoyed gardening, fishing with his grandchildren, hiking, going on long car rides looking for adventure, and attending Native American rendezvous.

Ron is survived by his two sons Jeff (Sherri) and Stephen (Dianne), his brother Hoyt (Karen), his sister Vikki (Gary), his grandchildren Nathaniel (Dulce), Derrick, Terri Jo (Colton), and Sean (Courtney) as well as his four great grandchildren who will forever cherish the memories they shared. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Carol Elizabeth Holmes, parents Harold and Lucille Holmes, and sister Nancy.

A formal service will be held on Saturday, May 16th from 11am-1pm at Oakland Mausoleum, 2619 W. Pearl City Rd, Freeport, IL 61032. The family invites all who knew him to join in honoring a life so beautifully lived.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date and will be announced once arranged.
