Rockford: Roy L. Modlinger, 77, of Freeport, died Tuesday May 17, 2005 at Rockford Memorial Hospital. Born September 3, 1927 in North Adams, Mass. He was the son of Julius J. and Alice (Hunter) Modlinger. On July 4, 1949 he married Voncile "Shine" Kirby in Aurora, IL. Roy was a Teacher and Coach in Lanark for 6 years before he came to Freeport. A former assistant athletic director and elementary school principal, he retired from teaching in 1990 after 38 years. But his dedication to the Freeport Pretzel's did not end. He was the man who volunteered his time to work the scorers table for all the home basketball and volleyball games and was in charge of all the scoring and time keeping activities in the press box for home football games and track meets for all levels. Roy was a graduate of North Adams Drury High School in North Adams, Mass. He received his Bachelors Degree from Aurora University and his Masters from Northern Illinois University. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and a veteran of WWII. Surviving is his wife Voncile "Shine" of Freeport, one son, Joe Modlinger of Beloit, Wis. two grandchildren, Lindsey Modlinger of Beloit, Wis. and Benjamin Modlinger of Galesburg, IL, two great grandchildren, Owen and Hayden Cagley both of Beloit, Wis., one sister, Helen Bird of Auburn, IL and one brother, Ralph (Barbara) Modlinger of Vero Beach, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Janet Modlinger, one infant sister and one brother. Cremation rites were accorded. A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday May 29, 2005 at Faith United Methodist Church with the Reverend Douglas Q. Bowden officiating. A gathering will be held immediately following the service in the church Fellowship Hall. A memorial has been established in his name for Faith United Methodist Church.
