Russell K. Mills, 89 of Freeport died Friday January 30, 2004 at his home. He was born September 7, 1914 in New Hampton, IA to Everett and Gertrude (Matzke) Mills. He attended schools in Iowa. He served in WWII from 1941-1945 and received the Bronze Star. In August of 1941 he married Miriam Kester in Freeport. He worked as a farmer in the Orangeville area and for Prairie State Select Sires. His memberships included Park Hills Evangelical Church, Adult Sunday school class, Stephenson County Mounted Patrol, lifetime member of the American Legion of the Ewert Kline Post 720 of Orangeville and charter member of the Illinois Sheriffs Association. Russell had a great love for horses, raising them most of his life. He enjoyed giving children rides.
He is survived by his wife, 2 daughters Debra (James) Metz of Gratiot, WI; Donna (Allen) Webb of Albia, IA; 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 1 sister, Vivian (Delmer) Hurless both of Freeport and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one grandson.
Friends may call Sunday from 4pm until 7pm at Walker Mortuary.
Funeral service will be held Monday 10:30 am at Park Hills Evangelical Church with the Rev. Wes Woodward officiating.
Burial will be in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
A memorial fund has been established in his name for Park Hills Evangelical Church.
