Ruth Goembel, 95, passed away after a short illness on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at Parkview Home in Freeport. She was able to live independently until the last 2 months.
She was born Oct. 1, 1913, in Dayton, Ohio, to Leslie Earl and Mabel (Kemerer) Lewis. The family moved to Chicago when she was 6. After high school she attended business school. She was secretary for Midwest Golfer & Sports Review and the Chicago District Golf Assoc. not knowing she would marry an avid golfer. She also was secretary for the Vice Pres. of General Mills. Ruth married Wayne Goembel in 1941. They moved to Freeport in 1953, which was home to Wayne. She was secretary for Blackhawk and Empire Schools and then for Malcom Eaton Enterprises. Ruth loved to sew, to read, to bake, and to be with Wayne. She was an active member of Embury United Methodist Church, supervising the elementary Sunday School and holding various rolls in the United Methodist Women for many years.
