Freeport, IL – Shirley Marie Long, age 85, passed away on May 18th, 2023, at Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford, IL surrounded by her family, following a brief illness.
She was born on July 16, 1937, in Freeport, IL, to parents Harry and Lillian (Moth) Julius. She grew up in Forreston and Freeport, IL and attended Forreston High School. Shirley grew up on a farm and loved all animals, especially her dogs and horses. She married Robert (Bob) Long on February 9, 1957, in Freeport. Together they built a life and had three children. Shirley's family meant everything to her and she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren any chance she could. She also enjoyed knitting, sewing and gardening.
She worked in food service and retail most of her life at Blackhawk School, St. Francis School, and later for Fashion Bug as a store manager. She was a member of St. Mary's Church and was a faithful Catholic throughout her life. The last few years of her life, Shirley lived at Medina Nursing Center in Durand, IL. She enjoyed painting, playing bingo, and interacting with the staff and residents.
Survivors include her three children; JoAnn Morgano of Rockford, Michael Long and partner Sonia Cashmore of Winnebago and Sandra (Jeffrey) Seiver of Freeport; 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. She is predeceased by her parents; husband, Robert Long, sister, Barbara Nesemeier; brother, Walter Julius; brother-in-law, George Nesemeier and son-in-law, James Morgano.
There will be a visitation held on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 beginning at 10am at Walker Mortuary in Freeport, IL. There will be a service immediately following at 11am, also at Walker Mortuary. A memorial has been established in her name for the Medina Nursing Center in Durand, IL. Condolences can be left for the family at www.walkermortuary.com
