Obituary

Susan 'Suzie' Jean Herbig, age 81, was carried by angels in the early morning hours at her home in the presence of family and friends on October 17, 2025.  Susan was the daughter of James Oscar Kuntz and Margaret Clara (Mayer) Inch.

Susan met her husband, Gerald 'Jerry' Herbig while working at Burgess Battery in Freeport, Illinois.  They were married on October 29, 1965, in Pecatonica, Illinois, and shared a lifelong marriage of 60 years.  Susan was also employed for over 30 years at Honeywell in Freeport, IL.

Susan enjoyed attending dog field trials, where she made many lifelong friends.  She was known for writing interesting articles for the monthly field trial magazine.  During the months of no field trials, Susan and Jerry would enjoy date nights and dancing.  She also enjoyed watching NASCAR and dirt track stock car races, with Dale Earnhardt and Jeff 'Bone' Larson being her favorite drivers.  Susan's pride and joy was her Chevy Monte Carlo SS Dale Earnhardt Edition car! She also enjoyed bird-watching, traveling across the country with Jerry, spending time with her grandchildren, and picnicking, which always included her legendary potato salad.

She is survived by her husband Gerald of Freeport, IL, son Dennis Herbig of Freeport, IL, daughter Kim (John) Heilman of Davis, IL, daughter Teri (Jeff) Daniels of Forest Grove, MT, grandchildren Curtis (Nicke) Herbig of Alabama, Matthew Heilman of Davis, IL, Geremy Pepper of Montana, Jessica (Walter) Derzay of Montana, Korey Pepper of Oregon, IL, great grandchildren Dawson, McKenzie and Rylan Herbig of Alabama, Faith Pepper and Xander (Pepper) Evans of Forreston, IL, Lane Reis, Brenden Pepper, Zachary Pierce, John Derzay, Jeff Derzay and Miriam Derzay of Montana, Melody Pepper of Oregon, IL, and numerous nieces and nephews.  She is also survived by bonus family to include the Larson family of Freeport, IL.  She joins her mother and father, stepfather William 'Tom' Inch, daughter Korinne Garnhart, and great-great granddaughter Harmony Herbig in eternal rest.

A visitation will be held at Walker Mortuary on Saturday, November 1st at 10:00am with a funeral service to be held following the visitation at 11am at Walker Mortuary.  A celebration of Susan's life will follow at the Freeport Moose Club beginning at 1pm.

The family would like to offer a special acknowledgement to the staff of Unity Hospice Lena Rehab and to Pleasant View Rehab for their professionalism, support and care.  The family would also like to recognize a very special friend, Mr. Bob Larson of Freeport, IL.
