Terrance (Terry) F. Groves, 75, passed away at his home in Freeport, IL around 3:20 am on Saturday, July 15, 2023, due to natural causes. Born April 13, 1948, in Freeport, IL he was the son of the late Walter and Geraldine Groves (Lapp). Terry was preceded in death by his brothers Randy and David, as well as his uncle Wayne.
On May 19, 2011, Terry found his true soulmate when he married Merialyce Groves. Together, they shared a deep and loving bond, and their marriage brought great joy to their lives.
From 1967 to 1973, Terry served in the US Air Force, proudly defending his country during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Okinawa on the airstrip with his sentry dog, Sarge, from 1969-1971. Following his time in the armed forces, Terry wholeheartedly committed himself to the betterment of his community as the esteemed director of Emergency Management and Zoning for Stephenson County for almost 30 years. His dedication, expertise, and love for his county were evident in every endeavor he pursued.
Terry always stayed informed about current affairs. His commitment to staying actively involved in shaping a better future reflected his unwavering spirit and desire for positive change.
Terry's life was filled with many memorable experiences. From his cherished childhood on his aunt Garnet and uncle Wayne's farm, to his dedicated service in the Vietnam War. His stories brought humor and wisdom to all who had the pleasure of being around him. Terry's ability to captivate others with his stories was matched only by his genuine care for the needs of others, always ready to extend a helping hand and give wholeheartedly. Terry loved being outdoors, enjoying activities such as camping, fishing, gardening, and maintaining his yard. He also exemplified what it meant to be an involved and dedicated father. From tractor rides in the yard, to camping in Wisconsin Dells, his children found endless delight in various activities that mirrored his own love for nature and the outdoors. For over 10 years, he wholeheartedly devoted his weekends to attending his kids' swim meets, proudly demonstrating his unwavering support and immense pride in their achievements.
After his service in the Air Force, Terry continued to contribute to his community. He worked in maintenance for the city of Freeport and bartended at Schnitzels. Additionally, he pursued his passion for culinary arts, working as a chef at Copper Connection and managing White Pines Restaurant for several years. Terry was also an active member of the Freeport School Board for approximately 13 years, dedicating his time and expertise to the students in the community. Terry also helped establish Freeport Alano Club, in Freeport, IL.
Terry's timeless presence will forever be treasured by his beloved wife, Merialyce Groves, who shared a deep bond with him. He will be lovingly remembered by his son, Patrick, of Chicago, and his daughter, Sara, of San Diego, CA. Terry's memory lives on through his sister, Robin Stykel of German Valley (Florida), and his brother, Reverend Mark (Debbie) of Texas. Additionally, he will be fondly remembered by his 9 cousins: Lana, Pam, Elaine, LuAnn, Melody, Cris, Sue, JoDee, and Bill. Terry's legacy also extends to his 6 nephews: Stephen, Jason, Kyle, Devin, Michael, and Evan; 1 niece: Kimberly; and 2 sisters-in-law: Suzanne Groves and Colleen Groves. He is also fondly remembered by his stepchildren, Kristene (Vern) Tibble, Susan (Michael) Hughes, and David Belcher; along with his step-grandchildren, Hope (Joshua) Sandine, Grace (Jack) Jones, and Amber Rickard. Terry's step-great grandson, Jakob, also held a special place in his heart.
Visitation will be held at Walker Mortuary on Monday, July 24 from 4pm to 6pm. Following the visitation, a funeral service will take place at Walker Mortuary from 6pm to 7pm. In honor of Terry's military service, a special ceremony will be held during the service. This ceremony will include a 21-gun salute and the folding of the flag by the honor guard, symbolizing his dedication and sacrifice to his country.

As we honor Terry's remarkable life, we take comfort in knowing that he is now in the presence of his Heavenly Father. The memory of Terry's remarkable life, filled with laughter, kindness, and selflessness, will forever remain in the hearts of his loved ones and those who were fortunate to have known him.
