Freeport-Vern L. Baker, 85, of Freeport, died Monday, May 15, 2006, at FHN Memorial Hospital.
Born July 13, 1920 in Freeport he was the son of Sherman and Clara (Schlamp) Baker. He married Helen Ketelhut June 20, 1941.
A World War II Army veteran he served from November 6, 1944 until July 1, 1946.
He and his brothers had the White Line Cab Company, the Yellow Cab Company, and the City Cab Company all in Freeport. In 1948 they established Baker Brothers Used Cars.
Vern enjoyed fishing, boating, skiing, golf, playing cards, and a bowler he sponsored the Baker Brothers Bowling Team.
Surviving is his wife, Helen; three sons, Raymond Baker, Ronald (Linda) Baker, and Gregory (Rose) Baker; one sister, Lucille (Larry) Miller; two brothers, Harold Baker and James Baker all of Freeport; 5 grandchildren.
His parents; 1 grandson; 1 great grandchild; and 1 brother preceded him in death.
Funeral service and entombment will be Friday 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace at Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum.
Visitation will be Friday 12:30 p.m. until time of service in the Chapel of Peace.
A memorial has been established in his name.
