Freeport – Viola Thompson, 104, the youngest of 10, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side.  She was born April 26, 1919 in Cummings, North Dakota. After graduating High School, she married Nelson "Nels" Thompson on October 9, 1945.  He died on May 3, 1972.  Viola retired from Micro Switch in 1984 after working there 20 years in the cafeteria for Swanson Foods.

She was a faithful member of Zion Church for 50 years.  At church she served in the Naomi Circle of Women.  She was an avid reader of her bible and a prayer warrior for many throughout her years there as a member.  She also was a member of the Amity Ladies Aid Society.  She taught adult Sunday school right up until age 95.  Spending time with her family was very important to her.

She is survived by her daughter, Becky Lammers of Freeport, 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 2 daughters, Bonnie Magee and Barbara Turner; 3 sisters, 6 brothers and 1 granddaughter, Jody Boyer.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Promedica Hospice for their care, especially their caregivers, Angie, Meagan and Rod.  A memorial has been established for Zion Church of Freeport and St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Services will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2023 with a visitation starting at 10am and a service at 11am all at Zion Church of Freeport.  Pastor Steve Rios will be officiating.  Her final resting place will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.  Condolences can be left for the family at www.walkermortuary.com.
