Virgil L. Bowers, 81, of Freeport, died Thursday, April 9, 2009, at Stephenson Nursing Center.
Born May 31, 1927 in Freeport he was the son of Lloyd H. and Mable C. (Lichtenberger) Bowers. He married Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Dunn August 6, 1949 and she died in 1979.
Virgil served in the US Navy from 1945 through 1946.
He worked at Honeywell Micro Switch for 38 years.
His memberships included Embury United Methodist Church, life time member and past Exalted Ruler of Freeport Elks Lodge, member and past Commander of VFW, lifetime Excelsior Masonic Lodge, Freeport Consistory KCCH, and Tebala Shrine.
Surviving are his children, Rebecca (Bernard) Leopold of Freeport, Merri Jo (William) Gamble of Havelock, NC, Joel (Mary Ellen) Bowers of Pewaukee, WI, and Jon (Rebecca) Bowers of Freeport; 5 grandchildren, Kristof Leopold, Kieran (Christina) Leopold, Mary Catherine Gamble, Jacob and Alex Bowers; 2 great grandchildren, Oisin and Brom Leopold.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
Memorial services will be Saturday 10 a.m. at Walker Mortuary. Excelsior Masonic Lodge will conduct their services followed by a funeral service conducted by Reverend William H. Blomberg.
There will be no visitation.
