Freeport
Virgil D. Hocraffer, 79, of Freeport, died Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at his home, after a brief battle with cancer.
Born September 24, 1929 in Sterling he was the son of Owen A. and Helen L. (Fletcher) Hocraffer. He married Barbara Lindbeck and she preceded him in death. He married Marlene Williams October 5, 1957 in Stockton.
He received his Bachelor of Science Degree and Masters Degree from Western Illinois University in Macomb.
Virgil was a Chemical and Electrical Engineer at Honeywell Sensing and Control for 30 years retiring in 1986.
He was a Charter member of Crossroads Community Church where he served in many capacities, including Deacon. Virgil, through Crossroads, participated in pastoral care by visiting people in the hospital and regularly ministering at area nursing homes.
Virgil loved spending time with his family, traveling, camping, woodworking, clogging, reading, and he was previously involved with Winneshiek Theater.
Surviving are his wife, Marlene of Freeport; sons, David (Doreen) Hocraffer of Edmonds, WA, Kenneth (Julie) Hocraffer and Tom Hocraffer both of Freeport; his daughter, Nancy (Dale) Wilhelms of Freeport; 4 grandchildren, Brandon and Tyler Hocraffer, Travis Wilhelms all of Freeport, and Erin Hocraffer of Edmonds, WA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, and infant son.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Crossroads Community Church. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery & Mausoleum.
Visitation will be Friday 4 to 7 p.m. at Crossroads Community Church.
