Virginia E. Dame, age 95 of Freeport, IL, went home to her Lord and Savior on Monday, January 2, 2017 at the Presence St. Joseph Center in Freeport, IL. She was born April 26, 1921 in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of the late Paul and Charlotte McKenney.
Virginia grew up and graduated from high school in St. Louis, where she also received additional training in art, a passion she loved for many years. This is also where she met Joseph Dame while roller skating when he was serving in the United States Army during WWII. They were married on September 8, 1943. After Joseph returned from his tour in Italy, they moved to Freeport, where they have lived ever since. Virginia was a bookkeeper for several Freeport businesses over the years, as well as a window dresser for Marshall Fields in Freeport. In their younger years, Virginia and Joseph traveled all over the United States and in their later years enjoyed wintering in Florida together. She also enjoyed reading and had a great love for art. She was talented oil and watercolor painter.
She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Joseph Dame of Freeport; brother-in-law, Royal Dame of Sierra Vista, AZ; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday January 18, 2017 at 10:15 am at the Presence St. Joseph Chapel in Freeport, IL. Interment has taken place at Oakland Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the American Red Cross.
