Walter S. Cowan III , age 71 of Freeport, IL, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2018 at the Stephenson Nursing Center in Freeport. He was born December 28, 1946 in Middletown, OH; the son of the late Walter S. and Mary Jane (Monce) Cowan Jr. Walter married Sylvia Williams on October 22, 1966.

He had worked at Kelly Springfield for 38 years, retiring in 2010. His memberships included the NRA, ABATE, and the Moose Lodge of Freeport. Walter was a gun enthusiast and enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed working on cars and riding his motorcycle.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Cowan of Freeport; daughters, Kristie Worden of Monroe, WI and Cheryl (Erick) Gassman of Browntown, WI; 12 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; brother, Tim Cowan of Cincinnati, OH; and sisters, Toni Fisher of Lebanon, OH, Missy (Ed) Miracle of Lebanon, Barb Barnes of Sabina, OH, Nicki Cowan of Dayton, OH, and Debbie Cowan of Lebanon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Darla Cowan; sister, Martha Cowan; and mother & father-in-law.
