Freeport-Wilbur L. "Bill" Kroeger, of Freeport, died Tuesday, September 14, 2004, at Provena St. Joseph Nursing Center.
Born November 25, 1914 in Eldridge, Iowa he was the son of Adolph and Olive (Roge) Kroeger. He married Elizabeth Lukermann on December 27, 1938 and she died October 16, 1987. He married Teresa Bana-Proficz April 26, 1997.
He graduated from University of Iowa with a engineering degree in 1939 and graduated from University of Iowa with a degree in law in 1941. He was admitted to the bar in 1941.
He served in the Army in Judge Advocate General's office in WWII.
Bill came to Freeport after WWII and joined Louis Reinhold law firm. The firm evolved with the addition of other lawyers and became the Schmelzle & Kroeger Law firm.
Bill retired from the active practice of law in the mid 1990s
He served as Director on GASB Board (20 years), Union Savings Bank Board (20 years) and Foresight Holding Company Board (5years).
He is survived by his spouse of Freeport, nieces, Caryn (Bernie) Maxim and Lin Kroeger (Alan Johnson); nephew, Jack (Maureen) Kroeger; sister-in-law, Janice Kroeger all of New Jersey; step-daughter, Mariola (Tom) Gryz of Poland; 2 step-grandchildren; 8 great nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Embury United Methodist Church.
Friends may call Friday 5 to 7 p.m. at Walker Mortuary.
Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery & Mausoleum.
A memorial has been established in his name.
