Obituary

William Fredrick Kiefer, 100, died September 10, 2012 in his hometown of Freeport, Illinois.
Mr. Kiefer took great pride in the fact that he was born on the kitchen table in his family home in Freeport on August 15 of 1912 to Frank and Catherine Kiefer. He was the middle of five children.
Fred graduated from Freeport High School in 1931 while holding a job at Steven's Grocery. In 1937, he married Margaret Louise Setchell. They were actively involved in the community, bowling league and card club until Margaret's death in 1977. They shared 40 happy years of marriage.
In 1957, Fred purchased Hulbert's Dry Cleaners in downtown Freeport and built a successful business. He sold the store and retired at the age of 72. Even after the sale, he still volunteered his time to the new owners as a tailor and mentor.
Fred had many interests and hobbies. He was an enthusiastic gardener and spent many hours working outside in his garden and yard. Each summer he made sure to give fresh produce to his family and neighbors. Fred enjoyed restoring old cars and spent many blissful hours working on his 1919 Model T. He entered his Model T in many car shows and won several awards within the community. Fred was a lifelong Cubs fan and spent many afternoons listening to the games on his radio.
Fred was an active volunteer in the community and spent his afternoons at the senior center enjoying the company of the staff and his friends. It was at the senior center he met his dear friend, Frances Laurence, who was with him the day he died. Frances was an important part of Fred's life and spent many pleasant hours talking, going to concerts, visiting friends and spending time with Fred.
Mr. Kiefer is survived by his two sons, Jerry and Wayne; Wayne's spouse; 4 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 5 nieces; 1 nephew; a sister-in-law and many other loving relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings: Paul, Francis, Vernon and Ruth Kiefer Kneller.
A gathering will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2012 from 12 pm to 2 pm at Walker Mortuary in Freeport immediately followed by a memorial service at 2 pm. After the service, a luncheon will be served at Faith United Methodist Church in Freeport.
The family would like to thank the staff at Liberty Village for their care of Fred.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Golden Meals.
